Grey’s Anatomy Recap: Did Season 21’s Explosive Finale Just Kill [Spoiler]?!?

For the last couple of weeks, the tension had been building on Grey’s Anatomy. Young Dylan came through the risky surgery that Amelia performed with flying colors — at first. Then, just as her parents Jenna and Aaron were breathing a sigh of relief, the little girl’s condition deteriorated to the point where she could no longer even communicate by blinking. Finally, in Thursday’s Season 21 finale, Jenna snapped. She took Amelia, Simone, Lucas, BokHee and more hostage in the O.R. and threatened to explode a tank full of acetylene if they didn’t “fix” her daughter.

Under any circumstances, pulling off that miracle would have been a tall order. But making it even taller was the fact that Amelia had to operate with only her nephew for a neuromonitoring team. (Simone wasn’t able to help as she’d been made Jenna’s primary hostage.) When Monica caught a glimpse of what was going down, she reported the situation to Richard, who ordered the floor evacuated. Though he was ticked at Meredith for revealing her plan to sell her shares in Grey Sloan to bankroll her Alzheimer’s research, even he couldn’t deny that she stepped up during the crisis, rushing into the O.R. with desperately needed fresh frozen plasma. So, did Jenna actually blow them all up?

Nope, Amelia Saved Dylan

GREY’S ANATOMY - “Everything has Changed” – After a long six months, Grey Sloan Memorial has reinstated its residency program. A group of talented and striving young interns has been recruited as the attending surgeons work to rebuild the program to its former glory. Meredith, still functioning as the interim chief, sees Nick for the first time since she rejected his offer to move to Minnesota. Meanwhile, Bailey tells Richard she is not ready to return to work; Levi works up the courage to break disappointing news to Jo, and things turn awkward when Link realizes he has met one of the interns already. With Amelia and Maggie’s help, the new doctors are thrown into their first day on the job dealing with injuries from a recent tornado on the season 19 premiere of “Grey’s Anatomy,” THURSDAY, OCT. 6 (9:00-10:01 p.m. EDT), on ABC. Against all odds, Amelia managed to save Dylan. (And I don’t wanna know what your heart is made of if you didn’t tear up while “Baby Mine” played during the last stages of the procedure.) When Amelia exhaled, “It’s over,” oh s—t! Jenna accidentally knocked over the tank. But no one had to be panic: It had been empty the whole time, she said as cops rushed in and arrested her. Was it empty, though? Was it really? Keep reading.

Jo and Link Honeymooned In a Supply Closet

GREY’S ANATOMY - “Papa Was A Rollin’ Stone” - Amelia undertakes a high-risk brain surgery on a young patient, while Winston and Jules disagree over how to handle their trauma patient’s family. Jo and Link struggle with wedding planning. THURSDAY, MAY 1 (10:00-11:00 p.m. EDT) on ABC. (Disney/Anne Marie Fox)

Since the newlyweds weren’t able to take off for a real honeymoon, they made the most of a free hour by schtupping in a supply closet. (What? Were the on-call rooms too far away?) “Floor sex is not comfortable when you’re pregnant with twins,” Jo observed. When the couple exited their makeshift honeymoon suite, they were unaware of the hostage crisis and very, very confused. “What rock did you crawl out from?” asked a nurse.

Ben Went Out With a Bang

Early on in “How Do I Live,” Bailey broke it to Ben that Teddy wouldn’t be recommending keeping him on at the hospital. So when a patient with a shattered liver started bleeding from his wound vac, Warren didn’t let the lack of an O.R. or an attending stop him, he leapt into action and reopened the guy’s X-lap in the ICU. When Bailey happened upon the scene, she was shocked. But as her husband pointed out, “What are they gonna do, fire me?”

Teddy Saved Nora, But…

GREY’S ANATOMY - “How Do I Live” - While the interns are excited to transition to second-year residency, an ordinary day at Grey Sloan takes an unexpected turn when a medical emergency unfolds in the operating room, endangering lives inside the hospital. Ahead of Nora’s hella dangerous surgery, Teddy fully unleashed the green-eyed monster on Owen. “Are you in love with her?” she asked. “I am married to you,” he replied. Absolutely the wrong answer, bro. Though Teddy, Winston and their team were ordered to evacuate the O.R., they as well as Blue and Jules refused to kill Nora by doing so. Before performing the final step, Teddy had second thoughts, but holy smoke! She and Winston pulled it off and saved Nora.

… Teddy Also Pulled the Plug On Her Marriage

Afterwards, Owen marveled that his wife had changed medicine. “And yet,” Teddy replied, “I still lose.” Finally, Owen admitted that yes, he had feelings for Nora, but he didn’t want to be with her, he wanted to be with Teddy. In turn, she said that she had come to the realization that there was no magical force field keeping them together, it was a choice every single time — and she didn’t want to make that choice again. What was she saying? “I’m choosing me.”

Winston and Jules Came Thisclose to Admitting Their Feelings

GREY’S ANATOMY - “Never Felt So Alone” - It’s all hands on deck at Grey Sloan when a group of medical students is injured by a floor collapsing at their white coat party. Jo and Link are forced to talk about the future, while Jules confronts Winston about his attitude. THURSDAY, APRIL 11 (9:00-10:01 p.m. EDT) on ABC. At the start of the episode, Jules began changing in an on-call room before noticing that a shirtless Winston was already in there. Which could happen… maybe. Anyway, the sexual tension was off the charts. Later, after Winston helped save Nora, Jules asked to be back on his service again. When he refused, she demanded to know why. “Lines were getting blurry. Did you not feel that?” he asked. “They were very clear to me,” she insisted. Sure, Jan.

Simone’s Hookup Turned Out to Be a New Intern

Going all the way back to the start of the day, Simone woke up hungover and full of regrets about sleeping with a handsome rando from Joe’s. “Way to close out your intern year,” Blue cracked when the dude showed himself out of their house. It got worse. After the hostage crisis, Lucas apologized to Simone and suggested, “If we can make it through that, the rest… doesn’t matter.” Except that Simone’s one-night stand had just been hired as a first-year resident!

Meredith Struck a New Deal

In the hour’s final minutes, Richard admitted to Meredith that he’d always imagined her and Bailey taking over when someday he retired. (As if that’d ever happen!) Somewhere along the line, it appeared that all his haranguing had had the desired effect on Mer. Rather than sell her shares in Grey Sloan, she asked Catherine for lab space at the hospital and offered to work there summers as a general surgeon. Of course, she’d also be available for consults.

Link’s Fate Was Left Up in the Air

GREY’S ANATOMY - “Hit the Floor” - The aftermath of the convenience store shooting brings chaos to Grey Sloan. Ben hits a wall with his new emergency preparedness plan. Romantic tensions surface for Owen, while Amelia and Winston disagree over the surgical plan for a young patient. THURSDAY, MARCH 6 (10:01-11:00 p.m. EST) on ABC. (Disney/Tina Thorpe)

As Aaron apologized for Jenna’s behavior, it came out that he hadn’t had any empty tanks on his truck. But the police even said it had been empty, Lucas pointed out. Uh-oh. Had Jenna turned the valve at any point in the O.R.? Amelia sent Lucas running to make sure that no one was still up there. At that very moment, Link, who’d just learned that his and Jo’s twins were both girls, was performing an arthroscopy. Kaboom! Would Grey’s Anatomy really break Jo’s heart — and ours — that way? (More on that topic here.)
