‘Yellowstone’ Star Piper Perabo Joins the Cast of ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ in Recurring Role

“Yellowstone” and “Coyote Ugly” star Piper Perabo has been cast in a three-episode recurring arc role in “Grey’s Anatomy” Season 21. News of the casting was shared in an article posted by Variety on Thursday, April 17.

Perabo to Play the Mother of a Child Facing Brain Surgery

The currently-airing season will resume its weekly episodes on Thursday, May 1, beginning with Episode 16 – “Papa Was a Rolling Stone.” The episode will feature Perabo’s introduction to “Grey’s Anatomy” in the role of Jenna Gatlin. The character was described as “a fierce mother who will do anything for her 9-year-old daughter Dylan, who is at Grey Sloan for a high-risk brain surgery.”

The logline for the episode reads: “Amelia [Caterina Scorsone] undertakes a high-risk brain surgery on a young patient, while Winston [Anthony Hill] and Jules [Adelaide Kane] disagree over how to handle their trauma patient’s family. Jo [Camilla Luddington] and Link [Chris Carmack] struggle with wedding planning.”

Perabo’s Arc Will Last Until the End of Season 21

Perabo is similarly set to appear in Episode 17 (“Love You Like a Love Song”) and 18 (“How Do I Live”), which will be the finale of Season 21.

In the season’s two final episodes, “Jo and Link’s wedding day arrives, along with some visitors. Meanwhile, Teddy [Kim Raver] and Owen [Kevin McKidd] are met with a familiar face seeking treatment, and Lucas [Niko Tehro] disagrees with Simone [Alexis Floyd] on how to approach a patient’s worsened condition. … While the interns are excited to transition to second-year residency, an ordinary day at Grey Sloan takes an unexpected turn when a medical emergency unfolds in the operating room, endangering lives inside the hospital.”

Perabo will star in the trio of dramatic finale episodes alongside “Swamp Thing” actor Andy Bean, who will play Dylan’s father. A promo trailer of Episode 16 shows Perabo and Bean as their characters discuss their daughter’s health with Grey Sloan’s resident neurosurgeon, Amelia Shepherd.

“There’s only one possible approach to [Dylan’s] angioma. It is very high risk,” Amelia warns the parents in the promo. Surgical interns Lucas and Simone can then be seen discussing the surgery in an elevator, with Simone telling Lucas, “We shouldn’t be doing this surgery…it’s extremely risky.”

Perabo’s Jenna appears again in the promo as she pleads with Amelia in the operating room, saying, “Save my baby, please.”

The promo trailer concludes with a glimpse at a discussion between Amelia and Dr. Monica Beltran [Natalie Morales] as Amelia questions her ability to pull off the surgery. Dr. Beltran tries to reassure Amelia, telling her: “I’ve seen you pull off the impossible.”

Amelia, still doubting the surgery, responds by saying, “[Dylan] is nine years old and whether she lives or dies is in my hands.”

The three-episode arc will be the latest credit in Perabo’s impressive filmography. The actress found her break-out role as Violet Sanford in “Coyote Ugly” in 2000 before similarly starring in projects like “Cheaper By the Dozen” (2003) and “Beverly Hills Chihuahua” (2008). More recent acting credits for Perabo include a five-season stint as CIA agent Annie Walker on USA’s “Covert Affairs” and an appearance on the final two seasons of Paramount Network’s “Yellowstone” in the role of animal rights activist Summer Higgins.

“Grey’s Anatomy” – now featuring Piper Perabo – returns to ABC on Thursday, May 1 at 10pm EST.
